PILOT TEST SITE TIELT (Belgium)
History of the site
Contamination occurs with mineral oil and phthalates in two zones in the groundwater and in a floating layer, for which remediation is ongoing. Previous attempts to remove the floating layer via 2-phase extraction did not yield the desired result due to poor soil permeability.
Geology:
The soil consists of alternating clay and sand and is very heterogeneous.
Groundwater Depth:
The groundwater is relatively shallow, starting around 3 to 3,5 meters below the surface.
Accessibility:
The site is located in an industrial estate, meaning access is straightforward. The contaminated area is partly underneath two buildings, where it’s not accessible. The area for the pilot is located just outside the building, in the section of the contamination that spreads to the adjacent site.
INJECTIONS
Between 29/07/25 and 07/08/25, injections were made at 12 points. The injection depth was every half metre between 3.5 and 6.0 m below ground level.
During the injections, the settlements of the adjacent building were also monitored by sister company MEET HET.
The injections were carried out using sand, oxidans and fumed silica.
During the injections, various operational difficulties were resolved (clogged injection head, short circuit causing product to rise in existing monitoring wells or existing injection points, leaks in pipes, etc.).
Follow-up
Monitoring of groundwater to determine the impact of the injections is currently underway.
