Pilot test Eeklo (Belgium)
History of the site
Historical soil contamination with ClE was identified in the soil and groundwater at the location of former activities of a textile production factory. The site has since been redeveloped and is currently a residential area.
Geology:
Heterogeneous sandy soil with clay lenses.
Groundwater Depth:
1 meter
Accessibility:
While the site has been completely redeveloped for residential use (apartments etc.), the contaminated area remains fairly accessible as it is located underneath a car park. Due consideration needs to be given to passersby.
Injections
Between 12/05/2025 and 05/06/2025, injections were carried out at 17 points.
The injection depth varied between 5.0 and 16.0 m below ground level, with only 7 consecutive depths being injected per injection point. During the injections, the settlement of adjacent buildings and/or structures was also monitored by sister company MEET HET.
Iron, sand and guar gum were used for the injections.
During the injections, various operational difficulties were resolved (clogged injection head, short circuit causing product to rise in existing monitoring wells or existing injection points, problems with injection equipment, etc.).
Follow-up
Monitoring of groundwater to determine the impact of the injections is currently underway.
